Tambekar Wada in typical Maratha style, a 140 years old, spacious three-storey building in oblong fashion, was the residence of the Baroda State Diwan or Minister, Bhau Tambekar. The unique feature of this gorgeous heritage structure is the frescoes on its walls, doors and ceilings. The paintings are in poly-chrome and of Maratha style of the 19th century, executed in 1874 according to the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). For some strange reason, the ASI started disallowing photography of the painted interiors from the very week of my visit! No officer was around to request for an exemption, and the cleaning lady who opened up the place for me kept a strict vigil on my camera and cellphone! Pleading nor bribery convinced her otherwise! I had to be content in clicking the exteriors ?
Do check out online sources for the paintings- they’re simply brilliant!. The address of Tambekar Wada, Vadodara is Raopura
